How much does it cost to make an app?

There are many factors that can affect the price of developing an app.

How much does it cost to make an app?

It is not easy to answer the question “How much does it cost to make an app?”

It depends on many different factors. There can therefore also be very large differences in what two different apps cost to develop.

Additionally, it is not just a question of how much it costs to develop an app. Once the app is launched, there will typically also be costs associated with maintaining the app and keeping it operational.

Price estimates for app development

At itpilot we have many years of experience in developing apps. That's why we can also help you realize your app idea. We always start with a non-binding conversation with you and possibly a concept phase, so that together we can define the purpose of your app as well as your wishes and requirements. This helps us to be better able to give you a development price.

The price for app development typically varies from around DKK 50,000 to several hundred thousand DKK – depending on the app's complexity, functionality, and requirements for design and operation.

App type

Typical characteristics

Estimated price level

Simple app

Simple design, no backend, few features

From approximately DKK 50,000.

Medium sized app

Logins, integrations, user interface

From approximately DKK 100.000

Advanced app

Complex functionality, backend systems, many features, etc.

From approximately DKK 250.000

Note: The above is to give you a price indication. We cannot give an exact price estimate until we know more about your wishes and needs, but we can quickly help you with an estimate once we know the scope of the project.

What type of app do you want to develop?

Before app development can begin, a decision must be made about what type of app you want to develop. There are several different types of apps, and the choice of app type has an impact on both development price, user experience, and maintenance.

Native apps are developed specifically for either iOS or Android and provide the best performance and access to the device's features, but require separate development for each platform.

Hybrid apps combine web technology with a native “shell” and can work across platforms with shorter development time, but often have certain limitations in terms of performance and design options.

Progressive Web Apps (PWA) work through the browser and can be installed like apps, but only have partial access to the device's features and don't support all the same capabilities as native or hybrid apps.

Finally, there are also responsive web solutions that adapt to screen sizes, but which do not function as actual apps and cannot be distributed in app stores.

Functionality & complexity

Something that has a big impact on how much it costs to develop an app is functionality and complexity. The more an app needs to do, the more expensive it is to develop.

Some of the features that are highly requested in apps are:

  • User logins
  • Database integration
  • Integrations with other systems and services
  • Implementation of technologies/device features (including GPS, Bluetooth, etc.)
  • Push notifications
  • Offline functionality

It's not just the number of features that matters. It's also about how complex each element is. For example, should the user be able to create a profile, or should there also be access to user groups, statistics, and advanced roles? All of this requires more development time.

To ensure that we understand your needs correctly, we always start with a concept phase, where we map out the app's core functions, key user flows and technical requirements together with you. This way, we ensure that there is coherence between your ambitions and budget.

Design & user experience

Although the functionality and complexity of the app have a major impact on the development price, design and user experience can also affect the price. A customized and interactive design will be more expensive than a simple and minimalist design.

When developing the design and designing the user experience, it is a good idea to create some different wireframes; that is, what the app's different screens should contain, and how users are sent from one screen to another. Here, the number of different screens that the app should have naturally also has an impact on the price – the more screens, the longer the development process.

Good design is not just about the visuals. It is also about how the user experiences the app in practice. We therefore place great emphasis on UI/UX design, so that your app is easy to use and creates value for end users..

Interactive elements, animated transitions, and small micro-interactions can help make the user experience more engaging, but they also require more development time and testing.

Also remember maintenance & updates

App development doesn't necessarily stop once the app is launched. The vast majority of apps require ongoing maintenance and updates to ensure the app remains secure and works properly across devices and operating system updates.

It is therefore important that you remember that in addition to the direct development costs, there will also be costs for bug fixes, updates and improvements, including the development of new functionality.

Depending on the complexity and data needs, there may also be operating costs. For example, these could be for:

  • Hosting and servers
  • Security and backups
  • Third-party licenses and subscriptions (maps, email, push services, etc.)
  • Analytics and monitoring
  • User support and technical operations
  • Ongoing improvements and expansions

Set a budget for app development

Although it is not possible to give a fixed price for developing an app, it is a good idea to set a budget for the app. Early on in your collaboration with itpilot, we will give you a price estimate based on the concept phase and possibly a requirements specification, so you know the development costs.

When you set a budget for your app, it should include the following:
  • Development costs (frontend and backend)
  • Design costs
  • Hosting and servers
  • Licenses and subscriptions
  • Maintenance and bug fixes
  • Further development
  • Possible marketing

By taking these areas into account early in the process, you create a more realistic picture of what your app will cost – both now and in the long term.
